Megadrive Gamegenie and RPGs

Hi, it's been a while.
I finally got the same cartridge of Phantasy Star 2 that I played as a kid from a friend.
Unfortunately, the onboard battery was dead, so I lost the save I used back in the day.
So, hurrying to finish it, I just popped the Gamegenie and quickly got the equipment, money, and levels I remembered I had.
I then saved it and was going to try to finish it as I had before.
So I discovered that my save file wasn't there.
Searching online I discovered it was part of a deal of Sega with Codemasters to license the product properly, so it was not defective.

My question is: has anyone ever tried to "disable" this feature?
I'm willing to try some ideas like for example building a circuit that keeps memory enabled when address $200000-$20FFFF and the /LWR or /URW pins are active, but I would like to know if someone already tried something and if this is a good idea.
Other than that, I remember seeing some decompilation / reverse engineering efforts of the MD's Genie software, but I can't find it anymore.
It's probably a better idea to try to modify the software to work as intended than to try a hardware mod, even with my knowledge of m68k assembly being next to zero.
